People Gone Crazy for Laptop
Posted by George on August 17th, 2005

Over 12,000 people attended a sale of 1,000 used Apple iBook in Virginia. All this stampede for some four year old laptops. As a result of this 17 people were injured and four needed treatment at the hospital. I bet most of these people went to get the $50 laptop in hopes of auctioning it off on eBay. The sale of these laptops was like what you would see at a line for concert tickets. I bet the next time they have a sale like this they will be really with riot police in tow.

“It’s rather strange that we would have such a tremendous response for the purchase of a laptop computer, and laptop computers that probably have less-than- desirable attributes,” said Paul Proto, director of general services for Henrico County commenting on the sale of the four-year-old machines.

for a few hours, shoving some people aside, and possibly urinating on yourself. You have got to love the description of the item: “works 100% greatly.” (Personally, I don’t think I’d buy a computer from someone who wrote like that.). (hat tip: CC Opinion ) The story was covered across the nation in almost every major media outlet. It’s fair to say that Henrico County was the butt of most of the jokes. We agree on the eBay front. In fact, we at Independent Sources calculated the oppotunity cost for the school of not selling them on eBay themselves to have been over $250,000 that would have gone right to the school district. Doy.

I guess no one at the school district knew about eBay or too lazy to sell it there. They could have even hired a trading assistant to do the work and still make more than what they did at the sale.

Here is one that was completed for$376.00, not a bad pay day for standing in line for a few hours, shoving some people aside, and possibly urinating on yourself.
